Consistent with conventional conference protocols, ISIM will charge a modest conference registration fee to help defray the considerable expenses incurred in mounting an event of this scale.
INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR IMPROVISED MUSIC
12th FESTIVAL / CONFERENCE
UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
JUNE 3-7, 2020
ISIM Festival/Conferences, which began in 2006, offer a unique opportunity for improvising musicians and scholars to develop world-wide collaborations.
The event is particularly auspicious for the host site in that it marks the 40th anniversary of the Jazz and Improvisation Department at the Melbourne Conservatorium and coincides with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. The Jazz and Improvisation Department, chaired by Professor and ISIM member Robert Vincs, celebrates the diversity of its student cohort and its geographic positioning relative to Asia. Musicians draw influence from the Australian landscape, African-American Jazz Heritage, and contemporary European practices. Australia holds a very unique position in terms of art making: it is simultaneously a young settler country with a rich multicultural population and a site of indigenous practices that literally can be traced back over 60,000 years.
